Wei Jiet is a dispute resolution lawyer at Messrs Sreenevasan, and holds an LL.B (Hons) degree from the University of Malaya. He regularly appears as counsel/co-counsel in landmark & high-value disputes at all tiers of the Malaysian courts.
Wei Jiet's maintains a portfolio of constitutional & administrative law cases. He acted for the Selangor State Government in the constituency boundaries litigation, which highlighted the gerrymandering and malapportionment of Malaysia’s electoral boundaries leading up to the 14th General Election in May 2018. Wei Jiet was also part of the legal team which represented former Bersih 2.0 chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah, who was detained without trial under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 on the eve of a massive Bersih rally calling for institutional reform. On the freedom of expression front, he acted for former member of Parliament N. Surendran and student activist Adam Adli who were both charged under the draconian Sedition Act 1948.
Among others, Wei Jiet is Malaysia's National Representative to the International Bar Association's (IBA) Young Lawyers Committee, the Deputy Chairperson of the Bar Council Constitutional Law Committee, the Secretary-General of the National Human Rights Society of Malaysia (HAKAM) & a member of the National Youth Consultative Council. He writes for & is commonly cited by the media on issues relating to human rights & democratic governance in Malaysia.
He is the author of several publications, including Halsbury’s Laws of Malaysia on Constitutional Law (2019 Reissue) as well as the Annotated Statutes of Malaysia on the Federal Constitution, Sedition Act 1948, Official Secrets Act 1972 and Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
